Australia's aquariums bring the wonders of the ocean to life — walk-through shark tunnels, vibrant coral reef displays, touch pools where kids can handle sea stars, and behind-the-scenes tours that spark a lifelong love of marine biology. With the Great Barrier Reef on our doorstep, Australian aquariums offer a unique window into some of the world's most diverse marine ecosystems.

Glass tunnels for a full day, or hands in the water

The two biggest names are the full indoor days. SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium draws its strongest reviews for the shark tunnels and Pig the dugong on the lower level; the Darling Harbour visitor page describes more than 100 metres of glass viewing tunnels and calls it one of Australia's premier attractions. It also collects the most comments about crowds and feeling enclosed, and the penguin area is kept cold. SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium rewards curious kids with staff spot talks, the hands-on Rocky Shores rockpool and a seahorse and sea dragon breeding display, and reviewers suggest four hours or more. SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast Aquarium in Mooloolaba adds a seal swim for older children, while Cairns Aquarium runs marine biologist talks across nine zones with a separately charged turtle rehabilitation centre.

Western Australia offers three quite different outings. AQWA The Aquarium Of Western Australia at Hillarys concentrates on WA native sea life, with mermaid shows and touch pools and a family beach next door. Busselton Jetty is a long scenic walk, or a train ride from either end, to an underwater observatory with its own entry. Dolphin Discovery Centre in Bunbury pairs free morning beach sessions with wild dolphins, who turn up on their own terms, with a small aquarium of turtles and octopus.

The smaller centres are about contact rather than spectacle. Irukandji Shark & Ray Encounters at Anna Bay has families wading in with sharks and rays, with baby ray tanks for gentler first encounters; one roundup of top zoos and aquariums names it a standout, with food included in the ticket. Solitary Islands Aquarium in Coffs Harbour suits ages three to ten for a 60 to 90 minute visit built around feeding sessions and a touch tank. The Central Coast Marine Discovery Centre in Terrigal runs on volunteer guides, a scavenger hunt and a craft room. Marine Discovery Centre at Henley Beach is scientist-led with no cafe on site, and Marine and Freshwater Discovery Centre in Queenscliff opens only in school holidays. Merimbula Aquarium & Wharf Restaurant is the odd one out: a hands-on aquarium followed by a premium seafood meal on the wharf.

The session-based venues at Anna Bay, Bunbury and Queenscliff sell out in school holidays and involve getting wet, so book ahead and pack a towel and a change of clothes.
