Puffing Billy in Belgrave is the one most people picture: open carriages with legs dangling, coal smoke that settles on clothing, and a two-to-three hour run to Lakeside, where the Puffing Billy Railway Lakeside Visitor Centre sits beside Emerald Lake Park. Reviewers say seating is unassigned and weekend departures sell out weeks ahead. Kuranda Scenic Railway trades forest for rainforest and waterfalls, with reviewers noting the heritage carriages have no air conditioning; Wikipedia lists it as a daily Cairns to Kuranda service. Pichi Richi Railway in Quorn runs through the Flinders Ranges, and its volunteer guides are described as making the journey rather than the scenery alone. Bellarine Railway in Queenscliff is the gentler option, with lake and swan views and a locomotive that swaps ends at each terminus.

Trams work differently. Bendigo Tramways and the Ballarat Tramway Museum both sell day passes that reward stopping at two or three attractions along the route: Bendigo's talking tram feeds kids local history between the Gold Mine and Art Gallery stops, while Ballarat adds a tram driver simulator and a tram-cat scavenger hunt for younger children.

Miniature railways are the budget end and the most kid-focused. Diamond Valley Railway in Eltham runs through tunnels in shaded reserve, but queues reach 40 minutes at midday. Altona Miniature Railway offers a 12-minute ride, but only on the third Sunday of each month.
