The catch is crowds and shade. Reviews repeatedly mention that weekends get busy and that natural cover on the sand is sparse, so weekday mornings are the quieter bet. It also closes for a stretch each winter for maintenance.

Musgrave Park Swim Centre is the paid alternative a short way from the parklands, and it suits families who want structure. Its heated magnesium learn-to-swim pool keeps young children in the water year-round, reviewers praise the instructors as outstanding and the facilities as clean, and both adult and children's lessons run in terms. There is free parking, grassy banks for drying off, and an on-site shop if someone forgets their goggles. SwimStart vouchers for children aged 0 to 4 are accepted. Toddlers and primary-age kids on a free day out point to Streets Beach; lessons, lap swimming and winter dips point to Musgrave Park.
