Zoos & Wildlife in New South Wales

Sydney offers three very different zoo days. Taronga Zoo Sydney in Mosman is the full-day option: ride the Sky Safari to the top entrance and walk downhill, timing the keeper talks, with Wild Ropes for teens. Tourism Australia calls it the city's most famous zoo and counts the harbour ferry as half the fun. Sydney Zoo at Eastern Creek suits Western Sydney under-10s, with child-height enclosures, misting areas for hot days and an annual pass reviewers rate well for repeat visits. WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo is the compact central option, smaller and more enclosed than reviewers expect, but with close-up koalas and kangaroos.

For hands-on contact, the smaller parks win. Featherdale Sydney Wildlife Park in Doonside covers everything on flat paths in two to three hours, with kangaroo feed sold at the ticket desk. Its sister park, Hunter Valley Wildlife Park at Nulkaba, is strongest for toddlers to age six, with feeding stations and a stamping book that earns a prize; the grounds are exposed, so go early in warm months. Symbio Wildlife Park in Helensburgh pairs kangaroo feeding with a splash park, and Shoalhaven Zoo in North Nowra adds patting areas, caves and lion feeding on a riverside site with camping next door.

On the coast, Australian Reptile Park at Somersby runs venom milking and alligator shows that grip adults too; Tourism Australia suggests it as a Sydney to Newcastle stopover. Billabong Zoo in Port Macquarie keeps distances short between crocodile, snow leopard and cheetah talks, while Coffs Harbour Butterfly House at Bonville mixes butterflies, a dinosaur show and mazes into a one to two hour stop for ages three to ten.

Blackbutt Nature Reserve in Kotara is the free-entry outlier: a calm bush reserve with plentiful picnic tables, paid parking, and animal exhibitions that only run in set windows.
