Museums & Landmarks in Queensland

Most of this list is heritage villages, and they differ mainly in scale and in what happens on the day you turn up. Historic Village Herberton draws the most consistent praise for hands-on access: reviewers say kids can touch almost everything, and the steam train rides and billy tea with damper at Pioneer Camp come up again and again. Caboolture Historical Village, listed as having over 70 historic buildings, runs bushranger ambushes on its train rides Monday to Friday only, and its cafe depends on volunteers so may be closed. Beenleigh Historical Village, described as twenty heritage buildings with items from the 1860s onward, is smaller, and Bob's printing press demonstration is the moment reviewers keep mentioning. Hervey Bay Historical Village & Museum saves its blacksmithing and rope-making for weekends. Chinchilla Historical Museum sits directly off the Warrego Highway and runs a mini railway with a sausage sizzle on the first Sunday of each month.

For indoor days, Queensland Museum Cobb+Co in Toowoomba pairs what Queensland Museum calls Australia's finest collection of more than 50 horse-drawn vehicles with a kids science zone; its blacksmithing workshops suit ages 10 and up and book out. Hinkler Hall of Aviation in Bundaberg is pitched at ages 5 and up, looks compact from outside, and stretches to two or three hours once the interactive exhibits take hold.

The free options are quicker, with one exception. Ipswich Art Gallery holds children aged 2 to 12 for hours in its Move It exhibition and Lego zone, with free parking on weekends. Gladstone Regional Art Gallery and Museum is a 15 to 30 minute stop built around activity tables. Ocean Siren / MOUA / Museum of Underwater Art in North Ward is a sculpture whose colour cycle runs every 15 minutes, best toward sunset as part of a Strand walk.
