The three big paid sanctuaries are all full-day commitments. Australia Zoo at Beerwah is the one Tourism Australia frames as Steve Irwin's famous zoo, and the Best Zoos page counts over 1200 animals, tigers and rhinos alongside koalas and wombats; reviewers love the croc show and the keepers but warn it gets very crowded, with Sunday midday busiest and Wednesday quietest. Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary adds a wildlife hospital, described as one of the busiest in the world, and the viewing area comes with entry. Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in Fig Tree Pocket is said to house over 100 koalas, and its free-roam kangaroo paddock suits toddlers and grandparents alike, though koala photos sell out.

Up north, Hartley's Crocodile Adventures at Wangetti is called the largest wildlife attraction in Northern Australia; the lagoon boat cruise is the draw, with 2.5km of boardwalks, sparse shade and basic bathrooms. In Kuranda, Rainforestation Nature Park pairs Army Duck rainforest tours with boomerang and spear throwing, and tour groups take most Duck slots, so book ahead. Birdworld Kuranda is a smaller stop where macaws land on arms; remove earrings first, tape is supplied at the gate.

Regional options cost less and ask less time. Rockhampton Zoo at The Range and Alexandra Park Zoo in Bundaberg West are both free with donation boxes; Alexandra Park covers in 60 to 90 minutes with a playground inside the grounds, while Rocky's chimpanzee talk is the highlight and animals go sluggish in heat. Billabong Sanctuary at Nome, for ages four and up, runs an encounter every 30 minutes and has a pool for the afternoon. Wildlife HQ at Woombye moves families between five zones by train but has sparse food. Mon Repos Conservation Park offers a flat paved track that is free even without turtle centre entry.
